The Gagron Fort lies in Jhalawar district of Rajasthan. Constructed on the command of King Bijaldev of the Parmar dynasty in1195 AD, the Gagron Fort stands as an exceptional example of a grand edifice being enclosed with the woods and water from all sides. It rests on a hilltop where the rivers Kali Sindh and Ahu unite.
Co-incidentally, according to the local belief, the Mughal ruler Alauddin Khilji, had waged a battle not only on Chittorgarh but also invaded Gagron in 1300 AD. The Gagron Fort
Diwan-e-Aam, Diwan-e-Khaas, Janana Mahal, Madhusudan Temple,Rang Mahal are other historical attractions inside the fort. The fort is sanctified with the presence of temples dedicated to the holy deities Shiva, Durga and Ganesha. The shrine of Sufi Saint Mittheshah located just outside the main gates of the fort is another noteworthy attraction where grand celebrations are organised on Muharram.
The story of Jauhar in Gagron fort
The Gagron Fort has a tragic history. Achaldas Khinchi was the last ruler of the illustrious Gagron Fort. In the year 1423, the Sultan of Mandu, Hoshangshah, in associating with his royal allies, attacked Gagron Fort with a sea of armed soldiers along. The enemy surrounded the fort from all corners and attacked it. Although, King Achaldas fought very bravely, unfortunately, the enemy forces killed him by employing treachery. When the Queen of Malwa saw the enemy ranks marching towards the palace, she committed jauhar to salvage her honour and many other women of the palace followed suit.
