WAT PA PAO
Wat Pa Pao, a noteworthy temple built in 1883 for the Shan community, who come from the Shan State of North Eastern Myanmar. Though the temple is close to the Old City, many people don't know about it and it's hidden just enough that one can easily pass by without noticing it on near the northeast corner of the moat.
WAT LOK MOLEE
This temple was built in the early 16th century by the Lanna (Northern Thai) king, Phra Muang Kaew. Many chedis in Chiang Mai are covered, but here you can see all the bricks making up the large structure. While Thailand is primarily a Buddhist country, Hinduism and ancient animist traditions also play a role in people's beliefs and you'll regularly notice depictions of Ganesh, Vishnu, and Brahma.
WAT UMONG
This temple was built in the 14th century, the city of Chiang Mai has since grown to reach the temple, and no longer seems so remote. The temple also runs a meditation center where foreigners and Thais are welcome to stay to practice and learn more about vipassana meditation. While it's easiest to reach by your own set of wheels, tuk-tuk and songthaew drivers will know the temple, pay a little extra for them to stick around for your return ride!
