Konark
So to begin with, Konark is the ancient city named after Surya – the Sun God, and the 13th century temple dedicated to the deity is the jewel in the crown of this destination. The temple is an architectural marvel for many reasons: the onlooker can behold the sun rising from its horizon by standing in the centre of sanctum sanctorum. In the year 1986, illustrious classical dance teacher and director Padmashree Guru Gangadhar Pradhan started the annual custom of celebrating the Konark Dance and Music Festival. For this reason, hoards of artists, tourists and patrons throng Konark in the winter season.
Reason Of Celebration
The obvious cause behind organising this fest is to provide a platform to different blossoming artists from India and abroad, and honour and celebrate the knack they possess in classical art form.
Venue of the Festival
The venue is the Konark Natya Mandap, the magnificent open-air stage which is set up to look like the ancient Natyashala situated in the premises of Sun Temple. As per the local lore, in the olden days, the dancers used the Natyashala to offer their daily worship to the Sun God. The festival commences December 1st onwards and ends on December 5th.
